General discussion forum / Re: CW operating eratically
« on: 2023-09-29, 02:43:54 »
Hi Mike - Thanks so much for the prompt reply. I have tried this suggestion several times and nothing happens. I think I am using the two correct wires on the patch cable. The drawing shows wires # 1 and 2 are used for CW. It looks like 1 and 2 are the two wires on the outside of the jack, a white wire wrapped around a colored wire. I am trying to attach my current settings for you to examine but the html files will not be accepted. I also wonder if there is a setting on the IC-7100 that may be an issue.

I am so appreciative of your support. I have thoroughly enjoyed the RRC 1258 - it has provided me with many hours of enjoyable operating.

I have been using RemoteRig RRC-1258 MKII successfully since 2016. My radio is Icom IC-7100. I have had success with CW and use a straight key. The key is plugged into the jack on rear of control head. Recently when I press the key the radio begins transmitting erratically and I have no control. This happens randomly. At times it will work fine for a short period of time and then malfunction. I cannot get it to work on 40 meters at any time, but at times will work for few minutes on 10, 15 and 20. I thought this might be a power supply issue but have substituted power supply and problem persists. This has  been going on for about a year. If anyone else is having this problem I would love to hear from them.

Hi Mitch, and thanks again for sharing your knowledge of the RRC's and your willingness to help. I will work on your suggestions but it will take me some time. I have a friend or two who are much more tuned in to these things than I am. I will advise you how things work out as I go along. I don't expect to solve this in a hurry.

Thanks again,

Good afternoon. I have had good luck overall with RRC 1258 MK II gear and have used it regularly for the past two and a half years, first with the IC 706 and since March of 2018 with the IC 7100. Recently I lost connection and radio would not come on for a period of about three weeks. During this time none of the settings in either RRC unit were changed and suddenly it just began working again. At times the red LED on RRC unit comes on which is indicative of internet shortcoming. This may happen once or twice a week and does not stay on more than 30 seconds. When this happens everything on radio stops right where it is until LED goes out. During the past ten days I was unable to turn radio on again for two or three days and then it just came on without me doing anything. posts that I have read indicate internet may be the problem.

Question one - when this happens is there anything I can do to re-start radio?
Question Two - is there anything I can do to avoid this?
Question three - what kind of internet performance should be required for good sound operation of the RRC units?
Question four - if the internet is the problem what specifics can I take to my provider to compare my internet service with requirements?

Thanks for any input. I think the RRC is the best way to remote and am very impressed with the equipment.

I am remoting an IC-7100 very successfully with the RRC 1258 MKII - I have no problem using a paddle connected to PAD jack on rear of RRC control unit - is there a means to use a straight key with this setup? I previously used the IC-706 MKII G and the key was connected to the mic jack on the 706 control head - Kenny, KA3DCO

I am very happy to report that finally my IC 706 and RRC-1258 are working together flawlessly. On November 8 the IT guy from my local cable company spent some time with me and made some configuration changes in RRC's. My local cable company services both the Control and Radio sites. The most significant change he made was enabling the "Ping Watchdog" feature of the RRC-Radio unit. Now, the RRC Radio pings every five minutes and after three "no responses" automatically re-starts the RRC unit. He also changed the web server port from 80 to 8081. Also, I am able to access the RRC Radio unit from my home QTH at any time via the web. Since these changes have been made I have had perfect operating conditions and am enjoying this immensely. I have also gained much respect for the RRC 1258 equipment.

Hi again Mike - I have separated the two RRC units and for part of one day everything worked perfectly - however on Sat. through today (Aug. 27 through 29) I am still unable to connect with RRC Radio via web browser and for most of this time the radio comes on and cuts off in 30 seconds or less and the audio is skipping so badly that it is not really usable - one thing of interest is that I have an error message on the RRC Control unit and I am sending you a photo of the screen that I took - if in fact "internet connection" is the problem, how can I present this to my internet provider for a possible solution? -  both RRC locations are on the same internet provider, who is a local company - in fact, the owner of the company lives in the same condo building that I live in - as always, many thanks for your help and your patience - Kenny, KA3DCO

Hi again & an update on my progress with problem. On Sat. 20 I moved the Radio RRC & radio body to a friends home, and I think, properly did the necessary port forwarding. We were not able to power up radio but we were able to connect to each RRC unit successfully. On Sun. Aug. 21 I moved Control RRC to same location. We were able to connect with each RRC but unable to power up radio via LAN. I then moved all equipment back to normal setup and connected everything as I have had it for the past four months. I am still unable to power up radio. On evening of Aug. 22 at 5:00 p.m. I was able to connect with both RRC's from my home but at 9:00 p.m. I could connect only to Control RRC, which is located at my home. The internet provider at control and radio locations is a local company and I am going to contact their IT person to see if he can help. I have put a lot of time, patience, money, and efforts into this project but I am approaching the end of my resources.

Mike- many thanks for the reply-this morning I connected both RRC's and radio head and body-the radio turned on immediately and has stayed on for four hours-what would you suggest as a next step?

In general I have had a successful remote operation since March of 2016. I live in a condo and my shack is several blocks away. My radio is IC-706 MK II and remote gear is RRC 1258 MkII. I am experiencing two issues, radio powering off after short time and the audio randomly pulsating off and on rapidly. Right now every time I power up radio it shuts off after 30 seconds or less. The first time this happened was May 4th, but until now has not been problem. I usually just power up again and all is OK. This has been happening more frequently in past few weeks. The other issue is the rapid pulsating of audio. This is also random and sometimes I may have a week with no problem, and then it comes back for days at a time. When this occurs it is next to impossible to operate. The first time this happened was on April 10. As time goes on it has gotten worse. I would assume that my configurations and settings are correct or system would not function at all. It does work and it works well most of the time . I have been impressed with setup and have gotten much pleasure being able to operate from home. Numerous times when these problems occurred I have re-entered port information in RRC's and routers and it disappeared for short time. I operated radio successfully using separation cable directly between radio control head and radio body for 45 minutes consecutively just yesterday. I have upgraded my internet server from Verizon DSL to cable which is three times faster. Both RRC units are connected to router via Ethernet cable, nothing is wireless. I have also considered the possibility of stray RF and have unplugged everything at both locations near the equipment. I am totally lost as to what to try next and would really appreciate any suggestions or help I can get.

Many thanks, KA3DCO

Hi Mitch - I feel quite embarrassed but I missed both of the items you mentioned - months ago I printed out the pages of the manual I thought I would need and completely overlooked the pages you mentioned - I will try these steps tomorrow and will let you know how I make out - I almost felt too embarrassed to reply - many, many thanks for your patience and help -

I am using Icom IC-706 MK II with detachable head. RRC-1258 works just great on SSB. But, I cannot get any output on cw when paddle plugged into PAD jack on rear of RRC-Control unit. When activating paddle I hear side tone, receive function is muted, keyer speed function and tone control work well, but there is no output. I have checked Keyer configurations numerous times and get no results. I am favorably impressed with RRC-1258 so far.

I thought I would reply to the message I had initiated on the Forum because we finally managed to get the RemoteRig units to connect across the internet an achieved QSOs using the interconnected head and body of an Icom 706 and using Apple AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express WiFI routers and wireless network extenders. Because there seems to be so little information on the Forum concerning Apple and Mac OSX equipment, we took the time to document our settings and a construct a drawing of the final setup. That documentation is provided in the PDF document attached to this posting. Hope it helps folks. 73.

Mike,

Thanks so much for your interest. The IP addresses in the drawing are "representative" not actual. I'd prefer not publishing the real addresses. Your earlier post, several days ago, resulted in discovering that indeed DBS appears to be working. A DNS hostname, own hostname, username, and password were reported from RemoteRig.com.

My suspicion is that settings are not yest correct on the "controller" side. RemoteRig DNS seems able to discover the radio, yes?

Thx
Scott
