Power Cycle Reboot Required
« on: 2010-09-23, 13:20:52 »
Strange new bug...

I now have to reset the power on my radio side RRC after making and setup changes i.e. serial settings etc.

Things worked great yesterday, today I could not connect. After much experimentation, I pinged both boxes and the router. The control side box and router responded, but not the radio side. I reset the power (pulled 12v connector) and pinged it Bingo!

I have a sense this is router related, but have changed anything on that side.

Any thoughts

That happened to me once as well after making some changes. Apparently the O/S hung while rebooting.

I am not sure if this is a real bug, since it can happen to any kind of computer. Of course, an embedded O/S should behave better, especially if installed in a remote location.

I "solved" the problem by placing the RRC on an IP power switch, along with a few other devices that tend to hang once in a while (rotator controller, etc.).

That will be my solution as well. I have also ordered a IP power strip for this and other devices.

Note: It also works with a telephone connection... for instance when you can reach your ip connection, because your router or modem need rebooting.

Probably much cheaper is this IP power switch with 4 separate contacts.
http://www.pimzos.nl/shop/aviosys/ipsensecontrol/ippower9223k.php
or
if you also have the webswitch 1216H then you could use one contact to do a timed reset

There are actually lots of these on the market. One more example of an inexpensive 4-port is at:

Hi Guy,

That would be hard to believe, but I will let you know when I get my hands on one next week.

Worst case, you just forward internal port 80 for that IP address to a different external port number in the router.

Ok Mitch pse do
but I know that in ON land (incomming) port 80 is closed for normal internet users
so they cant setup a webserver at home.
The one I suggested has also WOL possibility and that makes it very interesting
for waking up a computer at remote side.

Hi Guy and Mitch,

I already use the NETIO230A for quite some while. Forwarding an WAN-Port different from 80 to the internal IP of the NETIO on port 80 is just a question of the router. At least my routers do support that feature (but they are not low cost consumer products).

@Mitch: Please let me know your experiences with this box. I have the problem that the internal web server does not respond after a very short uptime of the box (so no need for port 80 anyway). I control the box via telnet which is faster for me and works reliable now for quite a long time. But maybe this problem with the internal webserver is solved with the newer firmeware.

Hi Simon,

I just ordered the NETIO230A yesterday. It got a good review from c't Magazine.

I decided I needed more than the two ports that I currently have on my Infratec PM-211 http://www.infratec-ag.de/index.php?id=99.
Besides, I am having reliability problems with it and would not recommend anyone buy it, even with the slick interface.

I will install it at the remote station the middle of next week and let you both know.

Simon, Mitch
More and more internet providers are closing port 80 for normal customers
so they can't run a webserver at home. In couldn't find something about setting
the port in the docs I found on internet.
I will order next week the IPPOWER9223K pcb because
you can draw much more current on the 4 outputs compared to the NETIO230A
also the wol is an interesting future.

Guy,

With most routers, you can determine which port is forwarded. For example, if 192.168.1.10 is port 80,
you can forward that port outside to xxxxx.dyndns.org:1234. The port 80 stays within the LAN.

I use WOL every day, but just use a client that works after I connect via VPN. My router (Draytek) also has
a WOL function built-in, just in case.

Mitch, forwarding is not a problem in all my setups (with and without VPN).
but for some reason (and I know why) I need to keep port 80 (incomming)
clear in my LAN even if it is from wan:1234 to lan:80

Guy,

I received my NETIO-230A today. I upgraded to a newer firmware (2.33), and now you can enter a web port number.

Note for anyone doing so: there is a major bug that causes it not to allow you in the box after the upgrade.
You need to use IE instead of Firefox to get in. If this still does not work, you need to so a hardware reset
by turning the box off, then hold in the two buttons on the front panel while turning it on, keep holding
and waiting until you hear two beeps. Then you can log-on with admin / admin under IE (not Firefox).

A bit of a pain, sorry, but this gives you an inexpensive 4-port IP power strip that works the way you want it to.
