Wireless ethernet recommandation?

Hi,

Has anyone tried to make a portable system by wireless ethernet on the control RRC side?
I'd like to make a box with wireless ethernet, RRC control and radio-front to cary around the house ;-)

Any recommandations for a steady,speedy & simple wireless ethernet box?

Hi Paul,

I use a wifi bridge at the radio end, but no reason it shouldn't work at the face end as well. My solution was to get  a WRT-54GL off of ebay, flash it with DD-wrt and set it up in wifi bridge mode. It cost me about 60 Euro altogether. Not super portable though!

Hi Paul.

I am using a Buffalo "High Power Ethernet Converter" on the control side.
Model: WL1-TX4-G54HP. It has four Ethernet Ports and I have the RRC and two
computers on it. Works great.

I have used a Linksys WET610N and a Linksys WET11 wireless bridge quite succesfully. I currently use WET610N 100% and works flawlessly. A used WET11 should be fine, but is only 802.11B and only supports WEP security. WET610N is 802.11B/G/N and supports WPA2.

The best portable solution that I have found is the Netgear WNCE2001:

This is very small and light weight, even running off of the computer's USB port.

Can you simply use two of these to replace a CAT5 cable?
Ethernet to box 1 and ethernet out of box 2?

I also like this idea on the radio side to make a galvanic seperation.
Looking at my remote SDR I can see quite a lot of noise and carriers, produced by ethernet.

That's a good question, Paul. I am not really sure, since this device only runs
in bridge mode, as far as I can tell. Other devices can be switched between
bridge and router mode. You could install another (larger) wireless router on
the other end as a solution.

My personal opinion is that you are looking for a solution without a problem. I
have not seen that kind of problem with ethernet before. It is however very
common to have ethernet birdies caused by a network, which that would eliminate.
I have also seen devices blown-up by lightning strikes that came over the
ethernet cables.

What I did with my remote SDR is placing it out of the house QRM field,feed it only with linear PSU's, making a wifi link to the house and push it over ADSL from there. This makes a very clean setup without much noise and carriers on HF.

If I put the RRC over there with a CAT5 extension  line, the amount of QRM (noise, warbles, carriers) is significantly higher, clearly visible on the SDR.

I'll experiment with some different shielded cables and chokes to see how much I can clean up. What I also do is remotely switch of the RRC if I am using the remote SDR.

But a 100 % clean HF may be an ilusion... :-)
Using the RRCs is already a 100 times better than my local QRM.

Hi Paul,

What you are describing is what I mentioned: ethernet is very "noisy", generating lots
of birdies and other RF garbage everywhere. It comes through the switch into the
cables and radiates all over the place. It has nothing to do with galvanic issues.
So therefore replacing an ethernet infrastructure with wireless in the shack is not
a bad idea in this regard.
