I`m use 3G on the radio side.

Here are my parameters.

Radio Settings

Advanced settings

- Rx Jitter buffer size                 =   12
- Rx Jitter delay                        = 10
- Audio packet size (ms)        = 30
- Continuous RTP Tx(Panel only)  = 1   
- Debug leve                            = 0

Which Type of 3G/UMTS Router You are using ?
My Router ( Linksys WRT54G3G ) dosnt stay connected to long, and needs pretty often a hardware or SMS Reset to reconnect ..
Mbe You have better experience ?

My router is an Dovado UMR - www.dovado.com
it has many good features,
- it try to reconnect if connection go dawn
- its can pings ip adresses "continues" to keep the connection running
- it resets itself and start all over again if nothing else helps
- I can start and stopp things (220V) with help of a so called tellstick switches from nexa ....

And just to besure that everything keep om working,
I use a simple timer that resets everything för about 15 min every night.

I have used UMTS/HSPDA to connect the panel side remotely to the Intermet, the Radio Controller is connected on (A)DSL 6 Mbps downlink. The reported UMTS rates range between 3.6 and 4.2 Mbps. With proper HSPDA connection I am achieving in Audio Mode 0 steady rates of around 100 kbps for the audio and for the data connection when moving the VFO knob of peak rates up to 380 kbps. The audio quality is acceptable and no interruptions are observed. Establishing the connection is a bit tricky. Further optimizations have not been tried yet.
I am using a Edimax 3G-6200n 3G Broadband Router with an O2 Webstick and concluded that this is a workable solution for remote access to the station.

I have also tried to use the USB-Webstick directly on a Netbook with Windows XP, connecting the RRC-1258 on the Ethernet LAN and sharing the UMTS connection. This is not stable to establish - it works only once, when the connection is established manually and than changed to share. I assume that this mode of operation is possibly prevented by the Webstick.

I use ADSL on Control side  (Apartment in City) 
and UMTS/3G on the Radio side  (a had prefered to use ADSL here to,
but the only possibility for internet in the summerhouse is to use mobile phone technology)

I have unsuccessfully tried to connect the Radio Controller via UMTS/HSPDA. I do not get an incoming connection established.
The configuration on the router is:
NAT enabled
Port Forwarding to the Controller on ports 11000,12000, 12060 (modified from 5060), 80 and 23.
I also activated a Virtual Server for incoming connects with the same ports for the Radio controller.
Firwall is switched off.
Can you provide me a hint?

Have you made sure that you have a public IP address at your remote QTH?
If you have an IP address that is not public you will not be able to access anything behind your 3G router since all traffic is routed through a SW router in the 3G operators network.

It's best to test a 3G modem & subscription before making a long commitment,
If you intend to use it at the Radio end. Both for signal strength and suitability. In OH we have three networks (3G), of which one seems to work with RRC and the other one not (current status). The third one I haven't tested. The probable reason is somehow blocked incoming ports. As "P2P" traffic is usually forbidden in those subscriptions, operators might introduce restrictions later, or hopefully ease up things...

Best to test the firewall / port forwardings before starting to test 3G, if you have the possibility.

Regarding 3G modems it also helped me a lot to insert a few snap on ferrites on the USB lead between the router and modem. The downlink speed went up remarcably, and the modem seems to stay connected.

With regard to the Public IP Adress - I have DynDNS addresses, through subscription (fast up-date rate) from which I use one at the Remote end.
With regard to the provider side, I have heard that the service provider usually block outgoing P2P connections. I cannot yet confirm for my provider which is using the German E2 network. A possibility to prevent this might be to use VPN tunneling - but this makes think a bit more complicated too. I will report further results here.

I have now successfully tested and switched over to the 450 MHz radio network we have in OH (Qualcom OFDM) , and it seems to give ping latencies of <80 ms, which makes a huge difference compared to typical 3G values of 700 ms.
Necessary ports are open. It has a monthly limit of 5GB, and after that your priority is supposed to start dropping.

I have used several Dovados.
UMR, 4GR, Tiny and now PRO.
All are very good but Tiny has only one USB and PRO has two
and many more options and is faster
