K3/100 controlling a K3/100
« on: 2014-11-26, 08:10:53 »
Hi

I've had a look through the Elecraft documentation but cannot find what I'm looking for. I wish to control a remote K3/100 with another K3/100. I've seen a recommendation that the two K3s and the two RemoteRig units should all be set to 9600 baud, however I cannot find any reference to the required configuration settings on the controlling K3/100. Surely there must be a required menu setting to put it into 'controlling' mode, rather than just being a normal K3 ?

Any pointers appreciated.

Just push and hold the menu button until the word "TERM" appears in the display.

Is it really needed to push the button Mitch ? As long as I used two K3/100 it was not needed as the RRC sends commands to both K3/100s to set them in the right mode. The baudrate has to be set to a correct value in all parts before of course.

Mike, I  was assuming he has the wiring and settings correct. If he needs the old Elecraft manual, I can e-mail it
to him. I think for some reason the current manual only explains how to use the K3/0 mini.

Thanks for all the responses so far, however I still don't have this working, for some reason.

At the radio end I have a K3/100 + RRC-1258 MkII.

Originally I had a laptop at the 'control' end (I tried various programs like N4PY Pegasus and K3Span). The laptop was connected to the control-RRC via USB and the Radio Settings/Program Mode was set to  NO.4 (Yaesu, Kenwood, Elecraft) on both RRC-1258 units. It worked fine.

I then removed the laptop and USB cable from the control-end and connected a K3/100 to COM2 serial port on the control RRC. I could still hear the audio through my headphones at the control end, however when I pressed and held the Menu on the Control-K3 it came up with TERM and stayed like that - there was no control over the remote radio.

I then changed the Radio Settings/Program Mode to 14. Elecraft K3 twin on both RRC units. The control K3 still didn't do anything and the audio disappeared. The speed was set to 38400 on both K3s and both RRCs (COM0).

I hope that makes sense - any suggestions please? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks John G4IRN.

It's not much that can be wrong. The only important setting is the baudrate. Have you checked the serial cable from the Control K3 to the Control-RRC ?

Again, if you need the manual specific to this installation, drop me a mail at
dj0qn (at) darc.de and I will send it to you. All wiring diagrams and settings
are in this manual, which is no longer available for download.
