Problem with audio and headphones
« on: 2012-07-27, 13:21:56 »
Hi guys,

The problem is simple

When I connect my headphones to the jack on the front of my ts 480 still hear audio through the front speaker

The audio is low but still more audio coming through the speaker while the headphones

Maybe the best is a video to see the problem:  http://youtu.be/vi00VqSUXgY

What I'm not setting correctly?

Any ideas?

Thanks for the support

It can't be a Remotrig issue. Maybe there is a setting in the TS-480 for it. I don't have a TS-480 here now so I can,t test.

I agree with Mike that this problem has nothing to do with RemoteRig.

I am not aware of a TS-480 setting that affects this, but I would check the
connector on the headphone cable you plugged into the control head. There
may be  short in it that is causing this to not be muted. Just a theory, but
worth trying. To verify, take any other headphone plug and plug that in to
see if it mutes the speaker.

The same thing happens with my 480, Fernando; when I plug the headphones in while the 480 control head is connected via the remoterig I have audio via the rig's speaker (low, but it's there) and via the headphones.  When I plug the headphones in when the 480 control head is attached directly to the 480 xcvr, not via the remoterig, the speaker is silent and the headphones carry the audio.  Same headphones, same settings, the only difference is whether the control head is connected via the remoterig or not.

I can't explain it either, and it's not an issue for me so I didn't explore menu settings for the 480, but this does happen to me as well.

That is strange, there is no logical technical reason that this would happen when
connected to the RRC. The radio as such is not even changed, only that the head
is separated via the two RRC's. The head is stand-alone and plugging headphones
into the jack should mute the speaker.

I also suggest that for test purposes you plug a different headphone into the jack to
see if the same problem occurs. The only explanation I can think of is a poorly wired
headphone plug. At least this will give us a clue if my theory is right or not.

I don't understand it either, the audio should be cut to the speaker when the jack is plugged in regardless of whether it's connected to the RRC or not. I'll try a different headphone as you suggest when I return to the remote QTH, it'll be a week or 10 days.  I'll let you know.

I first noticed weak audio from the speaker with the headphones plugged in, while remote, about 5 months ago.  I thought it was strange but at the time I figured it had something to do with the rig's menu settings so didn't explore it until I saw Fernando's post and tried it at the station's QTH yesterday.

I'll post my findings in a week or so.

Hi guys,

Thank you very much for your messages

I think I have the solution, at least in my case

Checking the setup of my sound card I found that I need to have activated the check "Line-In" to get audio through the headphones and not through the the speaker TS-480.

I think I have the solution, at least in my case

reviewing the configuration of my sound card I found that I need to have activated the check "Line-In" to get audio through the headphones and not through the speaker TS-480

If you disable the check "Line-In" and connect my headphones, I listen to audio through headphones as both the speaker of my TS-480

My sound card is SoundMax Integrated Audio and my PC is a DELL Optiplex GX 620

Steve, thanks for the email, I hope that my discovery can help you too

Thank you all for support
