K3 Mini Term Mode
« on: 2017-04-10, 15:09:51 »
I am remoteing with the Remote Rig twins, K3 Mini to my K3 at home.

Has been working good till all of a sudden. What happens is when I turn on the Mini, it goes into the Term mode as normal and I can hear stuff from the K3 at home BUT the Mini won't control the K3. The display is stuck on it's boot-up screen and the knobs does nothing, no control. I think the K3 hasn't shut off at home nor can I shut it off with no control from here. I have it hooked to a PC at home and a laptop here. Connecting with Teamviewer works well.

What should I look for?

thank you Dwight NS9I

Hi Dwight , it seems you have the serial port of your K3 at home connected to your pc so the pc can control the K3. Then the serial cable from the Remoterig box might not be connected to the K3 and thus no control of the K3 from the K3/0-Mini. Solution: connect the  serial cable from the Remoterig box to the K3.

I have had that problem. I tried a serial Y-splitter cable for connecting both the pc (for home use with N1MM+) and the Remote rig box, but that did not work for me. Does anyone know how to connect both a RR-1258 and a pc to a remote K3 at the same time. They do not have to work at the same time, but the RR-1258 must have priority over the pc so the K3 is always able to be controlled remotely by the K3/0-Mini.

Hi Palle and thanks for the reply.

I don't have the serial cable from the K3 to the PC and do have it connected to the Remoterig via a Y-cable that also runs to my SPE 1.3k amp.

This has worked this way for some time.

When I go to the remote site via Teamviewer and run Microbit Setup, browse the device, and have the Mini On, Under Status, it shows Connection Status as OK and SIP status as Connected/transferring. It shows basically the same on the Control end.

I hear the Radio at the remote but  the control does nothing.

Does 'UDP cmd status' display any errors at either end?

Dwight,

Try just rebooting your router. I bet that solves your problem.

Rebooted it at the control location, no results.

Also tried at terminal program and the command PS0 at the remote site to shut the K3 down. No results. I assume I'm addressing the right port of Com5. The K3 serial is connected to the RRC Com2 which turns up in Device Driver as Com5. No shut off! ;-)

I see now that you said that both RRC's indicate a solid connection and no errors, so the problem is in that
case not a problem with the internet.

Is the frequency that the control K3/0 is displaying the correct one on the radio side? That would let us narrow
down the problem.

I have seen this a few times where it was not indicating the correct frequency, could not
control, but audio was coming through. This was caused by a serial connection problem, e.g.:
- CAT cable was not connected
- baud rate on an RRC COM2 was incorrect
- baud rate in one or both of the K3's was incorrect or didn't match the RRC's (menu RS232 setting)
- One of the RRC's COM2 setting was set to use USB (should be NO)

I do not understand your comment about COM5. The way this thing works is that a "real" serial cable connects
the K3 (K3/0) with each RRC's COM2 port. The cable on the control side is a null modem cable, the one on the
radio side is straight. The control PC's USB port can be used to control the system using CAT, but it is completely
independent upon how the two sides talk to each other.

Hi Mitch

The K3 Mini is just displaying 1.822.37, which is what it usually shows when first turned on in the TERM window. When it connected (was connecting) with the K3  at the remote then the TERM would disappear and would display it's freq.

CAT cables are all connected and Baud Rates the same as 38400. Noe are set to use USB.

My device Mgr at the control site after boot up shows:

RRC1258 COM0 (COM7)
RRC1258 COM1 (COM4)
RRC1258 COM2 (COM5)
RRC1258 COMExtra (COM6)

at the Remote site:

RRC1258 COM0 (COM4)
RRC1258 COM1 (COM1)
RRC1258 COM2 (COM5)
RRC1258 COMExtra (COM3)

At the control site I use (Com4) for DXLab and N1mm+ and they worked fine.

Tnx Mitch 73 Dwight NS9I

Hi Mitch and thanks for the info.

Just got off the phone with Brandon at Elecraft.

Basically what it was in my case, the rs232 got changed in the remotes K3 to some other baud rate then the 38400 I have everything assigned as. So in went into the microbit manager, under Serial settings, and cycled thru the Com2 baud-rate settings to find out which one the radio got changed to. In my case it was 19200. Then he was able to connect with the radio and change it back to 38400 in both the radio and the Com2 baud-rate.

While there are a number of things that could have changed that, including other software, it's all speculation to me! It's working and I'm happy! ;-)

Hi Dwight,

That was one of the items I mentioned to check in my last posting to you, but I guess you
overlooked it and called Brandon instead. Glad that you got it working!
