TS-480 hangs/ no audio after power on
« on: 2018-09-13, 04:32:59 »
Hi,

About two days ago I encountered a weird issue. My Remote Rig setup was working perfectly fine and stable between my shack in Redmond, WA and my
remote station in Germany.
Now when I turn on the radio, I get full display but no RX audio. After a few seconds the controls then freeze and I can't even power off the radio using the
power button on the control head. A few seconds after the freeze, the radio powers off by itself.

I tried a hard reboot (a.k.a. power off) at both ends to no avail. No config changes have been made between the two states.

Hi Mike,

Did you reboot the routers? This problem is an internet issue and is usually caused by a router problem.

I haven't touched anything, nothing changed, this behavior appeared out of the blue. It turned out to only appear on
USB/ LSB but not CW. I fiddled a bit with the input and output settings and for now it seems to work fine. I'll need to
stress test to ensure that fixed it.

I think you misunderstood me.

You should reboot both routers and the problem will likely go away.
It us caused by a buffer filling up in a router.

Curious, which buffer are you referring to and which routers did you see this happen with?
Will try that but would like to understand more.

As I understand it, UDP packets are buffered because they are not ACKed like TCP packets are. These buffers
can fill up if they can't be passed on quickly enough to the destination port and basically get "backed-up",
causing the problem that you describe.

I have seen this maybe 40-50 times since I started helping people with their RemoteRig setups about eight
years ago. The most problems I saw were with the German Fritz routers, but I have seen that across the board
with Netgear, Linksys, etc.

Anyway, it was almost always solved by just rebooting the router.

Hmm .. interesting. UDP is a connection less transport where you just send the packet but don't care if it arrives.

It seems to work fine for now, next time this shows up I'll try to reboot the routers on both ends. The one in Germany
is the Telekom provided one, the one here in my house is a Ubiquiti router.

Exactly, the problem occurs on the control side, since the radio side only sends the packets.

Anyway, hopefully it will continue to work from now on.
