Shared remote radio location...
« on: 2011-05-02, 18:59:56 »
Our state EMCOM group wants to locate a remote TS-2000 that can be shared at three different locations.  Ideally, it would be nice if receive audio could be simultaneously monitored at all locations.
Control of the remote TS-2000 could be selected separately but what happens if two or more client units try to connect at one time?
Also, if we can't listen on all remote clients simultaneously, can we use a software "SIP" phones to conference the three locations into the received audio stream?

Your attention to my request is appreciated.

Hi

Only one client can be connected at the time, the second who tries to connect will get a busy tone/indication. Ordinary SIP phones can not be used. Maybe you can put a separate audio streaming server there just for listening.

Thanks... that's what I was afraid would be the case.  We want to eliminate a PC at the remote site where the TS-2000 will be located but we might have a "master" listener that will then multicast the audio. The remote site is connected to the HQ by a dedicated microwave Ethernet link so we have some flexibility.
If you ever revisit your firmware code for the RemoteRig you might consider adding SIP multicast support.  That would be handy for those that want to stream the audio to the Web.

We release new firmwares quite often, latest one today. We will consider your idea, you are not first one either. But as we do not have a PC in the black box we have limit the functionality also.

That would be wonderful if possible.  I've played in the embedded microcontroller world so I appreciate the effort and limitations.  I asume that we can use the "status" page to see which client is connected to the host.  That way the users would know who to "yell at" to get them to disconnect. HI!

To give you an idea of our application, we will have a TS-2000 located at a remote site with a microwave Ethernet link back to HQ.  The Ethernet link will be on the main facility's "intranet" with a portal to the Web.  Three "client" stations will be on the intranet and one "client" will be in a mobile command post that has satellite and/or 4G access to the Internet.  Latency may be an issue with the satellite link.

I have just ordered by RemoteRig from HRO for pickup in Dayton.  I also have the same request to be able to have alternate unique locations connect at times.

Thanks all!

Well, I have a work around if needed... I plan to "steal" audio from the "master" RemoteRig client location and send it to a PC's external USB sound device and use Skype in "conference call" mode.  The other locations would listen via Skype and request that the "master" disconnect using Skype text messaging when they need to use the radio.
This means that each location must have a networked PC and that the "master" location operator add supervision of the Skype links to their duties.

If this feature could be "in the box" it would sure help and work much better!

I also have the same request. We have two RemoteRig (TS-480) installations
with nine users each, they would like the possibility to listen in.

In one of the locations, there is a PC running 24/7. We installed a normal audio
splitter cable and ran the second line to the PC's sound card input. We found
that using Teamspeak was better than Skype, since it is a permanent "room"
where you can log-on and listen.

The second location is PC-less, using only serial port forwarding (Lantronix). There
we still need a solution, which we would also use at the first location if possible.

Hi

We will never be able to make it possible for multiple users to connect direct to the box for listening. There is not memory enough for that.

What we might be able to do is to make it possible to set up a fixed IP-adress where the RRC could send a RTP-audio stream. Then you could take care of the audio and distribute it from a PC.

Thanks, Mike, that would be better than nothing  ;)

I never expected the box with its limitations to do the actual streaming, but
some method of accessing a stream over IP for rebroadcast would be great.

Hi Mike,

Here is an oldie, but goodie  ;)

Any further thought about making the RTP audio stream available in a future release?

Another issue with sharing the radio between users seams to be that they tend to forget to disconnect before they go to work, and block for the other. We have a Skype shat with the users of the remote, to tell when we connect or disconnect. Unfortunately that does not help if the users leave home...

I have tried to kick the user out by changing the password on the RADIO RRC. After that it is possible to get the audio up without problems, but it looks like the control from our forgetful  ham is still interfering.

Question:
If the SIP password is changed and the RRC is restarted (on the radio side), will all the three ports used (SIP, Audio and Command) be disconnected?

We are using K3 Twin, but I currently run my RRC Control in mode 4 with HRD control. (serial MODE-7).

Hi Gunnar,

There are two ways to do that:

1) Just go to the radio's RRC and klick below on "Restart device"
2) If you use an IP power strip, just turn off and on the power

If you change the SIP password, this forces the RRC to reboot, so of course the user loses
the connect. However, this would be extreme overkill just to disconnect someone!

Hi Mitch et al,

doesn't the control RRC try to reconnect after it looses connection to the radio RRC? If so, then rebooting won't help as the active control RRC will connect as soon as the radio RRC is back online.

Hi Simon,

There is a radio setting "auto connect" that is default set to "no". As far as I understand,
this only connects upon power-up, but not when the connection to the radio RRC is lost.
Since I have never had this set to "yes", I can't verify if that is what happens. Maybe Mike
can chime in, or else I can do some experimenting.
