Hej Pål !

(Sorry for the English. I read Norsk, Svenska & Dansk without problems, but have problems when writing).

As I have been using TS-480 with remoterig for 3 years with my remote station at Geysir geothermal site operating from my home near Reykjavik, and I also have unused IC-7300 plus RS-BA1 and RC-28, I would appreciate to learn a few things about your experience. (I have not used the IC-7300 in remote setup).

Now I am thinking:

Should I sell my TS-480 and use my C-7300 plus RS-BA1, RC-28, as well as the Remoterig boxes for CW . . .  ?

What is your experience? Do you like your remote opeation better after chnging to IC-7300 ?

Hi

I understand this is a very old thread, but as I have had exactly the same problem as Craig AE7I describes very well, I would like to learn if a solution has been found.

About two years ago I installed the remote part of a new TS-480 in my summer cottage near Geysir, about 100 km from my home QTH.  It has worked very well except for  the tedious startup procedure that is exactly að Craig describes.

Recently I bought a second TS-480 control head and a second new control  RemoteRig box.  The intention is to use this when travelling or use it within the local network at my summer cottage.

As a test I have swapped both RemoteRig control boxes and both TS-480 control heads at my home home QTH but the startup problem is still there.

The latency/jitter in the link is stable max 45 ms as measured with the PingPlotter.

So again, has a solution been found?

After several connection attempts with my help My RemoteRig + TS-480 setup works almost perfectly.  I do not experienced any dropouts.

But...

When I turn on the TS-480 rig with the power on/off button the red light appears on the control RemoteRig box. Usually the HELLO greeting appears and freezes.  Then I wait until the red light turns off and I have to remove the 6 conductor plug for a second from the TS-480 control head, and then the radio finally starts and everything remains OK after that.  It seem to be something related to the serial connection between the RemoteRig box and the TS-480 control head.

If I switch off the TS-480 with the power button on the faceplate, and then ON again, I have to repeat the procedure (wait until red light goes off, and then remove the 6-corecable for a moment).

Something wrong with the RemoteRig control unit?

Something wrong with the TS-480 control head?

---

I use 13.8 volt linear power supplies at both the control and remote station for powering the RemoteRig Boxes.

The Internet connection is very good.

   Any suggestions?

The problem is mostly solved.

1) I replaced the wall transformer at my home QTH with a cable to the station's main 13.8 volt power supply that I mainly use for my IC-7300. The wall transformer was only supplying 12.0 volts.  For safety reasons I put a 1 ampere fuse in the cable. Now the system is powered at both sides with 13.8V from linear supplies.

2) The link between the two RemoteRig units had 7 hops according to the software PingPlotter.  I replaced it with another link with only 4 hops.  The new link uses a high speed (100 Mb/s) service  at the local QTH, and a 4G router (40 Mb/s up and down) at the remote site. Both services are run by the same company www.siminn.is so interconnections are short and few.

My RemoteRig + TS-480 setup works now almost perfectly.  I have not experienced any dropout.

The only quirk is that when I turn on the TS-480 rig with the power on/off button the red light appears on the RemoteRig. Usually the HELLO greeting appears and freezes.  Then I wait until the red light turns off and press the power on/off button again. This usually is sufficient to wake up the Kenwood.  In some cases I have to remove the 6 conductor plug for a second from the TS-480 control head, and everything remains OK after that.  It seem to be something related to the serial connection between the RemoteRig box and the TS-480 control head.  I can live with this minor quirk until I find a solution.

I note that the wall transformer at the home QTH is only 12.0 volt.  I will try to supply the local control RemoteRig box with 13.8 volt.

At my summer cottage / antenna farm the RemoteRig box is supplied from the main 13.8 volt supply though a 1 amper fuse.   No problems there.

I also note that after the frozen HELLO text appears and the RED light lights up it is sufficient to wait for a minute or so until the red light turns off, and then disconnect the TS-480 front for a moment with the 6 contact connector.  Then the Rig will start up correctly.

The next step is to power the local RemoteRig box from my main 13.8 volt station supply through a fuse. Hope that will help.

I have a Remoterig connection between my home near Reykjavik and my summer house near Geysir the geothermal site. Internet connection is good at both places. Rig is an one year old TS-480 and the Remoterig units are about 1 year old. Power supply for the local Remoterig is a wall transformer ordered with the Remoterig, and at the remote site power is obtained from the 13.8V 20A linear supply via 1A fuse.

Every time I power up the rig with the Power ON button on the Kenwood the red indicator on the Remoterig lights up. The Kenwood says HELLO an then freezes.  Then I have to disconnect and reconnect the 12V supply from the wall transformer and again power up the Kenwood from the front panel. The Kenwood wakes up and the connection works OK.

If I power off the Kenwood rig and power on again, then the red light appears again and I have to cycle the power to the local Remoterig as described above.

It does not help to wait one minute until the red light disappears.

Any solution?

Hi

Remoterig only transfer the audio, if variable audio is connected to the Radio-RRC, variable Audio will be ouput from the Control-RRC. If you use a TS-480 you have the second audio channel free so if there is a fixed level output from the radio it can be transferred through the second channel.

Hi Mike and Dennis.

Thank you very much for the answer. I will take a look at the second channel method.

Using the Signalink with the variable output from TS-480/Remoterig is not a big deal however. The Signalink has a convenient volume control on the front so it is easy to compensate there for the variable output.

I hope the use of the CW decoder is only provisional. I have recently returned to the hobby after about 30 years inactivity, so my CW is not as good as it should be. I received my license in 1964, and even used TF3OM/SM7 1969-1971 while studying in Lund (Civ.ing. @LTH).

Remoterig is a great product :-)

Thanks again

Hi.

I am using RemoteRig to remotely control a TS-480SAT in my summer house near Geysir about 100 km away from my home QTH near Reykjavik. Antenna is a EFHW 80-10.  Works very well, and I love to be able to enjoy little QRM in the rural area.  (In addition I have an IC-7300 at my home QTH, but local ORM is bothering me).

I have connected the Speaker output of the RRC 1258 MkII via SignaLink USB sound card (spkr or aux input) to my PC where I have a MRP40 Morse Decoder.  This works well, except for the fact that the level from the Speaker connector varies with the volume control.

I know that I can also use the AUX/MIC connector on the RRC if I add a speaker jumper wire inside the box, but it seems according what I have read that the signal level is also variable.

Now the question: Is it possible to get a constant level audio signal from the Control RRC?  (For example approx. standard line level or similar).
