RRC-1258 MkIIs dead after failing firmware update
« on: 2013-08-15, 05:23:56 »
New owner of a pair of MkIIs trying to update to latest firmware:

Installed Setup Manager from Web site OK.
Connected Remote box via USB and drivers all loaded OK.
Setup Manager reported  Version 006, Firmware 2.50, Bootloader 1.9, HW 006.
Found 2.72 firmware on Web site and downloaded to PC.
Pointed Setup Manager to the file ("Select file"), then launched Update.
Setup Manager reported "SW Version successfully retrieved" and "FW/HW Version successfully retrieved," then nothing more happened.
Windows 7 Home Premium reported a "USB device malfunction."
SM Update button is now grayed out, even after SM restart, RRC power cycle, USB disconnect/reconnect.
Found some old correspondence recommending to use Web update process after using SM Setup to specify LAN parameters but can't do this because everything on the Setup tab is grayed out (and it doesn't look anything like the frame capture on Page 29 of User manual Rev. A32.
So I seem to be dead in the water. I could try the other RRC box but I don't want to get it into the same state.
Suggestions?

It has never happened before that a firmware update has failed. Of course it's a small risk if the power fails during the flash process. What does the LEDs show ? You can connect a terminal software to COM1 set to 38400,N,8,1 no handshake and see what text the unit shows when it boot up.

Thanks, Mike. The PWR LED is solid green. The Ethernet LED is blinking green. I disconnected the USB line and connected the COM1 port to a real COM1 on my PC. Then I power cycled the device and got the following from HyperTerminal:

To me all looks OK, the firmware is upgraded to 2.72 and you can browse the unit at http://192.168.1.84:9080. What do you mean is a problem ?

Yes, I can see the device at 192.168.1.84. But to do anything there requires a User Name and Password. I don't see a way to establish those. I bought the devices from another ham. Maybe he established a Web page user name and password per the description on P. 42 of the manual and maybe these are stored in the device itself. I will ask him.

Also, the Setup Manager no longer sees the device, either via USB or serial port. It looks like I can do everything from the Web page once I establish credentials but I am concerned that Setup Manager worked before the aborted firmware update and not afterward.

Thanks.

To be sure about the Setup Manager:

You have tried for ex: another USB cable,  another USB port, rebooting the computer, another computer?

What do you mean with "either via USB or serial port"? Setup Manager works only with USB.

And yes, user name and password are stored in the RRC. If you do not know them you have to do a factory reset.
Always include type of hard/software and version when asking for support.

Thanks, Jan. The reason Setup Manager failed appears to have been a conflict with Elecraft's KPA500 COMport number assignment. One more reboot of the PC resolved the conflict and SM is now working. (And so is KPA500 Utility which was crashing with what I thought originally was an unrelated problem!)

After that, seeing your comment about factory reset to get around the old password, I located the reset button and did the reset. Now SM shows the default IP address as expected. I was unable to connect my browser to 192.168.0.228 but I used SM to change back to 192.168.1.84:9080 and now I can talk to the device using either SM or the Web page.

Lots more to do but I seem to be back into the documented script.

Thanks for the help, folks.
