Hourly Data Usage
« on: 2016-11-26, 00:21:58 »
Hello:
First post.  Can anyone comment on the approximate data usage on an hourly basis.  I am in the planning stages just now for a remote site that will have to use 4G LTE as the data link on the remote site.  I'd like to size the data plan and not go overboard with the requirements.  Yes data usage for an individual would be based on amount of time the link is used, but for comparison purposes I would like to put a stake in the ground to compare the ISP vendors.  Right now am looking at AT&T and Verizon.  Looked at Sprint an T mobile and there data plans do not vary much from the big guns in the market.

Thanks

Hi Karin,

Actually, this question has come up quite a few times if you search the forum. A couple of examples:
http://www.remoterig.com/forum/index.php?topic=1119.msg4654#msg4654
http://www.remoterig.com/forum/index.php?topic=897.msg3611#msg3611
etc.

Basically, it depends upon how you configure the system. If you use the lowest CODEC, it should
run you in the 60MB+ per hour. range

However, keep in mind that a RemoteRig system will not work with the radio side using a
standard 4G connection. This is because the standard consumer 4G providers do not use a true
external IP number, but use internal IP numbers that can't be routed over the internet (double NAT).
The only ways around this is to either pay extra for a true external IP number (usually business
contracts), or else setup a VPN. You will also find threads on this subject if you search the forum.

Good luck and let us know if you have any further questions.
