webswitch 1216e
« on: 2009-12-10, 21:22:48 »
Hi Folks,

I have just bought a 1216E webswitch, but am having a problem getting started. I have plugged the box into my PSU and the green light comes on no problem. The switch is plugged into my ADSL router via a tested good ethernet cable.

So, I log into my router config homepage (http://192.168.178.1/) and whilst the router recognises that a cable is plugged into the port (with a green light) no new device is shown in the LAN IP address table. What am I doing wrong?

Is the switch provided with preloaded firmware?
Is there a problem becaue the webswitch IP address is 192.168.0.236 and I need to change it to 192.168.178.x to match my router?
Should I connect to the webswitch direct from my PC to change the webswitch IP address first?

Or have I missed something else?

Hi

Yes you must use IP-setup to change the IP-address of the WEB-switch so it fits into your Network 192.168.178.xxx. The safest way is to connect a cable direct between the PC and WEB-switch but you can also just connect them to the same switch or HUB. Remember that after you have filled in the numbers in IP-setup you have to disconnect and reconnect the power to the WEB-switch before enter Apply

Thanks Mike,

I need a little help with the PC side of things: I have tried both static and dynamic IP address settings on my PC which is connected directly to the web switch via the ethernet cable, but I cannot connect using the default ip address in my web browser, or via the updater application.

Can anyone help? I am sure it is obvious, but I haven't worked it out yet!

Thanks
Steve

I have now sorted this out with Mike's help over email.

To place a record for others who may be struggling in the future

1) I set the IP address on a PC to 192.168.0.3
2) plugged both the PC and the 1216 into a network switch
3) Accessed the 1216 via 192.168.0.236 (pwd 111111)

I then used the little app to alter the 1216 ip address to fit router on my home network.

It seems that using a network switch solved all my problems. I also had a small problem based around one particular PC that had several NICs installed - moving to a machine with a single ethernet port sorted me out there.

Thanks for Mike for his help.
