IC 7100 : JMP2 into RRC 1258 CTL : 0 ..really ?
« on: 2013-07-20, 17:11:27 »
Hello all !

I've just got an IC 7100 to replace my TS480.

Rev.A29 instructions for RCC_ Control Hardware configuration tell to set up JMP2 to 0 ( not connected).

Until now, previous manuals instructions tell to connect JP2 (1) to set 8v for all ICOM (against TS 480 which need 9v to power the control panel).

Are you really sure we have to set JMP2 to  0 for the 7100  ?

I don't want to fry my new toy , Hi !

Thank you in advance for your reply.

Congratulations Microbeat to be so quick to release these units !

best regards

Eric

Re: IC 7100 : JP2 RRC 1258 CTL : 0 (9v) indeed ?
..I'm replying (partially) to myself...

...IC 7100 control panel does need 8v and not 9v like all ICOM.

But once again why JMP2 to 0 ? It was my configuration with new TS 480 to provide 9v !

...Or should we understand that  the strapping configuration is set up as to provide 8v ?

...I'm still lost....

See you soon

Best regards

Eric,

Mike is on vacation, but he checks the forum at least once per day.

There may be a clue when you look at the manual on page 103:
"The display and speaker amplifier needs a lot of power so you need 1A."

That is likely the reason it needs 9v. Again, Mike should confirm, but that
is probably the answer.

Thank you very much for the infos, Mitch !

But :

Page 102 in "Connections", it is stated that "the signal" throught pin 1 from the standard CAT 6 cable is "8V power to control panel(only when radio is ON)".

In the "Open the box " tile from Microbeat website, comments along JMP2 picture recall the explanation about the effect :

"
JMP2 is placed near the back of the box next to the RESET button. JMP 2 is used to select if the DC-power to the front panels should be 8 or 9 V. With the strap in place it will be 8V which fits all ICOM:s. Kenwood TS-480 and RC-2000 panels need 9V for the backlighter to be strong enough. With JMP 2 not mount the voltage will be 9V.  (JMP 2 is only available in the Control-RRC)."

...so my question ...!

That said, it seems from this forum that 7100 owners have played with Remoterig units, yet.

I guess they had strictly followed the new intructions and connected the JUMP2 without smock !

... so you are probably right !

I'm going to try to wait for Mike comments ...if I am patient enough :)

...I intend to use very short cable bitween RRC control and 7100 panel ( about 20 cm)...so the Ohm Law will not shut down very much the signal...

Very nice from you Mitch for coming in .

PS : If this info is helpfull I'am running Hardware 6 (nr 4232 and 4234) RRC 1258 MKII units.

Hi Eric,

I am sure that Mike will respond tomorrow. My guess is that this is a typo
and it should say 9 volts. This would be consistent with what the manual says
on page 23: "Without the strap the voltage will be 9V, which fits Kenwood
TS-480 and RC-2000 panels that need 9V for the back-lighter." I assume
that the IC-7100 panel is at least as "hungry" as the other rigs.

This is not a big issue, set it to 8V then if you want to be safe, The voltage is regulated down to 5V anyway in the Control panel. Like in the TS480 the only thing which is connected direct to 8/9 V is the backlight LEDs. I dont' have the schematics with me at the summerhouse so I can check what it says.

Good Morning Mike,

Ok, perhaps I'am a little paranoïd suddenly !
I'll get a try without jump2.
I'm comforted by the fact there is a regulation into the control panel.
If 8v is not sufficient I'll do see it.

Enjoy the rest of your holidays !

...I've just finished the whole setup...JMP2 to 0 (non strapped)
..."Ta-da !"...it works flawless !
...I let it like that for now...

End of the story !

Cheers to you both Mike and Mitch.
