Elecraft K4 with RemoteRig
« on: 2022-06-16, 18:01:20 »
Hello,

Has anyone tried to remote an Elecraft K4D with a RemoteRig using a K3/0 Mini? The commands for K3 and K4 are to a large extend the same, so it might be possible that a K3/0 Mini will be able to control at least some basic functions of the K4.

If Remoterig can power the K4D ON it should be possible to transfer audio and use Win4K4Suite to manage the K4D through the serial connection provided by Remoterig. However it would be better to use a K3/0 Mini for the basic functions where the commands the the same in the K4 and K3.

Hi

When the  K3 twin setup was developed a separate ( faster and more simple) protocol was defined between the K3/0 and K3 which is NOT the same as the standard CAT protocol. So I doubt that they have implemented it in the K4

Tnx Mike, I thought CAT was used K3<->K3. Seems I have to wait for the Elecraft VK4 software or try Win4K4Suite and one of the many ways of transfering audio.

In this video https://youtu.be/WZvGW7HvgYM?si=h2AanuIBZHulzScX Eric from Elecraft says at 5:05 that RemoteRig boxes works with K4. Since I have RemoteRig boxes and an Elecraft K4D I would like to have them working together. Has the software been updated since last year?

Tnx Mike,

That means that RemoteRig RRC 1258 does not work with an Elecraft K4D though Eric from Elecraft said is does?

This topic has been dormant for a while but I'm wondering if something is possible with the K4.  With a couple of TCP/IP utilities plus Hamlib, I have control of virtually every aspect of my K4 from anywhere, but I lack a couple of important things.
- audio streaming (not implemented outside K4 to K4)
- CW keying (I can do this with keyboard input, but I'd like remote keying, ala RemoteRig)
- remote mic input (not high on the list since I work almost exclusively CW)

Would it be possible to use RR boxes "headless" for audio streaming, i.e., to have RR box taking audio from the radio at the remote end and providing keying, and only the RR box at the user end providing audio and keying?  I already have full CAT control of the rig through my logging program and an SSH tunnel. With another ham I am working on a Python clone of K4 Macromaster.  I can turn the radio on and off remotely with some other utilities I developed.  The audio and the keying components are the only thing missing.

The audio output of the K4 has many options, including front and rear headphone jacks, and line in/line out.

I have an RRC-1258 Rev 6 pair.

Yes
Many hams use Remoterig for Flex that way to get the live CW functionality. Set program mode = 4, and if you want the connection to be up forever set auto connect = yes. You do not need to connect anything to the CAT ports, just use PAD jacks Speaker and mic

Thank you!   I will give this a try.  What about jumpers in the units?  Is there a configuration for these, perhaps the K3 configuration?

Yes the jumpers is for the mic so if K4 has the same mic connector config as the K3 you can use the K3 strapping

Perfect.  I'm mainly a CW op, but it would be nice to use the mic if I wanted to.
